What are some challenges you've faced when incorporating technologies like Goosechase into team building efforts, and how have you overcome them?

I think that I mentioned this previously, but I ran into issues with mobile devices.  Not all schools had a 1:1 setup with mobile devices, so many times I had to team students up (which worked!) but it was difficult to work on an individual basis.  Sometimes we ran into networks and students logging in to a 3rd party (I used to have a class of log ins, student1, student2, etc. so that we could still do an activity. Even when I took older students into an elementary school, log ins were handled differently, so we ran into roadblocks.  One thing I’ve often thought about is having a computer option for students.  I know that takes away some of the fun of mobility, but it would help in some situations.

We even had to go through a lot to be able to load the app on district devices.

Has Goosechase thought of partnering with other software as an add-on?  Just a thought.

I just typed a long piece her, and when I hit send, I got an error code. :-(

We had issues with mobile devices:

*trouble being allowed to load the app on district devices

*trouble with log ons on the network

*No 1:1 mobile capabilities

Thoughts…

*A computer based option (I know it would take away mobility, but it might help in some education environments

*Partnering with other ed tech software as an “add-on”

Once I refreshed the screen, I could see my posts though when I hit send, I received the error message, and they appeared not to post. :-(

I think the key is to make sure that your are focused on “team building” when you create the missions, and therefore eliminating the sense of competition.  Sometimes the competition gets in the way.  This game was created for a foreign language teachers PLC: https://gsch.se/game/c62255611149442a8cb137814915c345/copy/

It was intended to bring the teachers that teach foreign language in our high schools together to find innovative, “game based” learning to the classroom to support Marzano teacher competencies.  Though they taught a variety of languages (Spanish, German, French, Chinese, etc), as a teaching “team”, the PLC could enjoy the game and then reflect collectively how such a game could positively impact student engagement, instruction and ultimately student learning.

a couple things come to mind:

  • Issue: issues with internet access on the day of the event. Solution: Try to get the app downloaded ahead of time
  • Issue: I have had issues with large groups when some teams aren’t accomplishing the missions as fast as other teams and get demotivated by seeing the leaderboard. Solution: Make events less demotivating by having the ability to make the leaderboard invisible. I   however, it would be great to be able to unveil the leaderboard at the end of the event.
  • Issue: technology burnout. I’ve had some groups balk at the technology aspect of goose chase - they were trying to get away from screens/technology.  solution:  I made a hybrid event that incorporated goose chase with a lot of physical activities so there was a mixture of tech and tactile.
